Safety
What Safety Measures are required for racing?
Weather Conditions
The race can be cancelled at the last minute if weather or sea conditions are deemed unsafe for rowing shells and escort boats
Expected sea conditions vary greatly and can include anything from flat water to high swells
Fog, rain, and wind can pose additional challenges
Safety Gear
One PFD per rower is required to be onboard the race boat at all times
A compass is required as a backup navigation tool
Wear a whistle, or attach the whistle to your PFD
Lights that attach to the bow and stern of the boat during low visibility (fog and early morning)
Escort Boats
Each race boat must have a dedicated support boat
Escorts must be prepared to assist rowers with navigation, safety, and emergencies. Navigational support for athletes while racing is prohibited
Escorts are allowed to provide clothing, water, food, first aid, and other support but cannot tow race boats
Athletes and escort boat skippers need to develop and submit a rescue plan during the safety briefing (September 6, 2024)
Athletes and skippers need a plan for breaks during the row, potential separation, and communication with the race committee and safety captain
