Make a Safety Plan
A Message from the Safety Captain
I've seen many of you out training in the last few weeks. You are doing great! It's so exciting!!!
Of course, along with training, a big part of being prepared for the crossing is having equipment on board to help you row to Monterey and successfully handle any unforeseen problems. Here are my strong suggestions:
Marine VHF Radio: Ensure both your shell and chase vessel are equipped with a VHF radio. Discuss communication plans with your chase vessel ahead of time. Know how to use the radio and have a freshly charged battery that will last at least 4 hours.
GPS: Equip both vessels with GPS for navigation, especially in foggy conditions. Like the radio, ensure the battery can hold a charge for 4 hours or more.
Compass: All SCRC boats should have a compass. In case your GPS fails, you’ll need it for navigation. It’s wise to monitor both the compass and GPS. Note that electronic devices like GPS and VHF radios can affect compass readings, so check your setup to avoid interference.
Self-Bailer or Other Bailer: Have a method to bail water from your boat.
Extra Seat or Seat Axle: Bring a spare. I will demonstrate how to replace an axle during the dinner on September 6th.
If you need a radio or GPS, let me know ASAP at nivenart@gmail.com. I will try to find you one to borrow.
As your Safety Captain, it's my responsibility to call off the race if conditions are unsafe. In my history with the club, this has only happened once due to wildfire smoke affecting air quality. Let’s hope, pray, and do a little dance for good conditions!
Stay safe and strong!
